Glossary of Stage lighting terms

Accent Stage lighting
Directional lighting which highlights an object or attracts attention to a particular area.

Alcove lighting or cove lighting
Provides the ultimate in performance and flexibility as a seamless, indirect low voltage linear lighting source.

DMX
Digital Multiplex (DMX512)
A way to plug mutable lighting fixtures together, and control them individually or all together.

DMX lighting universe
512 DMX channels

DMX traits
DMX traits are the number of channels per fixture.

Truss warming
Trusswarmers are lights placed to light up or "warm" the metalwork of the truss. They are often placed inside shining though truss at the ends/corners of truss.

Up lighting & down lighting
Architectural details can be highlighted through the strategic placement of lighting fixtures. This technique provides a dramatic effect. The light source is mounted or recessed and angled upwards to display accent and background lighting.

What is a "scrim"
A firm open-weave fabric used for stage or cathedral design. This fabric reflects
color and light intensity. Great for creating different patterns, shapes and depth for optimum impact.

What is a "spot"
High intensity illumination directed to a specific area. Usually a medium to tight beam angle. Best used from front of stage or cathedral.

What is a "wash"
A wash fixture is usually deployed as a back or side lighting effect.
When using wash fixtures you can control output, dynamic color changing, and color temperature.

What is "psych lighting"
It's a light effect that's focused on back output lighting bursts. Usually used as an effect to light the audience.
